Sawmill Co-Products - making the most of sawmill co-products

In round terms approximately 50% of a tree going into a sawmill comes out as a co-product.

Using our dedicated fleet of wagons, we collect those co-products from sawmills throughout the UK, marketing them into the appropriate end markets.

The bulk of the woodchips go into making chipboard and MDF, and we are a major supplier to the panel board industry.

Biofuel is a growing market and AW Jenkinson has secured several major contracts throughout the UK. The largest of these is with E.on, who have built their 40MW plant alongside our site at Lockerbie. This contract alone will consume approximately 500,000 tonnes of woodfibre each year.

Another key market is the Equestrian market. Apart from supplying woodchip for riding surfaces, we also produce shavings and sawdust for bedding, producing around 30,000 bales each week.

AW Jenkinson and its associated companies are a major supplier of processed bark. Although we bag over 4 million bags of bark, the majority goes out in bulk form to landscape gardeners and other users.

Various grades are produced to meet the various uses, from soil improvers, through mulches, to bark for play areas.

We also supply a large quantity of woodchip into the landscaping market, including coloured chips.

Some sawmill co-products also find their way into the Agricultural market, for use in bedding, cattle corals and walkways.
